ANN ARBOR, Mich.. – University of Michigan student Edwin Kang became the first recipient of a General Motors scholarship for Korean American students who aspire to be leaders in the engineering field.
GM and the Korean American Society of Ann Arbor created the scholarship award to encourage area Korean students at the University of Michigan to be involved in the organization, the Korean community and GM. Kang, a junior majoring in aeronautics, was awarded $2,000 at a Dec. 22 ceremony.
“We’re extremely proud to be a part of this,” said Edd Snyder, GM executive director, corporate communications. “General Motors is a truly global company and, as such, we’re always looking for new talent from a diverse set of sources."
“Our hope is to foster the next generation of international innovators and leaders, and to help provide them with means to succeed,” Snyder added.
The partnership between GM and the Korean American Society of Ann Arbor began earlier in 2007, when Society President Chol Yi approached GM with the opportunity. As a former GM employee, Yi knew that the company is always looking for ways to get involved in the community and felt this to be the perfect opportunity for the GM and organization to collaborate.
“We’re committed to building a great relationship with Korean Americans in this area and beyond,” Snyder said. “So this opportunity was great because we were able to create a new, hopefully annual, program that reaches out to this valuable community.”
Snyder also added that GM-Daewoo has been operating very successfully in Korea, so the company also hopes to attract a new generation of leaders who can help further bolster its presence and image in that country.
In 2008, GM and the Korean American Society of Ann Arbor plan to expand and improve this program so that the scholarship fund can benefit more Korean American students.
